What role did geography play in the relationship between US and the Soviet Union during the cold War?

Two countries were divided geographically and as Churchill has said it even the whole Europe was divided by the iron curtain. Soviet Union influenced countries that were located in Eastern Europe and that had Communist regimes. They even created the famous Warsaw Pact. On the other side United States created a military alliance with countries of Western Europe by establishing NATO. As two countries were physically divided both of them tried to create influence in different regions as much as possible.
