In Chapter 6 and Module 7, we learn about deviance and how different sociological theories, including the labeling theory, approach this issue. Consider the following scenario: Matt and Sean were friends. They were also Air Force Academy cadets. One night, Matt and Sean attended a party
that included underage drinking. The party was very loud, so the neighbors called the police. Sean had left the party right before the police arrived.
Matt remained and got caught. As a result, Matt was expelled from the Academy and was never able to have a career in the Air Force, while Sean
continued with his studies, graduated and became an Air Force Colonel.
After thinking about this scenario and about what the labeling theory tells us about deviance, please answer the following two questions, making sure
that you explicitly link your response to the chapter and the module by clearly specifying the source of the information about labeling theory that you
are using, for example the page number in the chapter where you found it:
1. How would a sociologist using the labeling perspective explain the difference between Matt's and Sean's experiences following the party?
2. Based on the labeling theory, what is the likely difference between how Matt and Sean view themselves years later?
