Congress interacts with the economy through Fiscal Policy which allows them to tax citizens to fund necessary programs. However, taxes can have another purpose which is to shape the behavior of US Citizens. What is known as a sin tax allows Congress to tax products that are deemed harmful like cigarettes and alcohol. As seen above “sin taxes” have their pros and cons but the question I ask you is does this actually prevent people from purchasing or consuming “dangerous” products? Is this a necessary action from Congress or should all items be taxed the same?
