Select the correct passage. Which of these passages would most likely be part of an expository text?

Passage 1
What makes weather? Earth's temperature is partly responsible. Water vapor in the air moves from one place to another
depending on temperature. Warm air rises, and cold air sinks. As the warm air around the equator rises, it moves toward the
poles and is cooled. The cold air around the poles also moves toward the equator. While this is happening, Earth is spinning. The
spin of the planet is called its rotation. The rotation of Earth is also important to weather. As Earth spins, the sun can warm only
part of it at any one time. The other part faces away from the sun. It is cooler. As a result, the rotation of Earth creates constantly
changing temperatures.

Passage 2
My plan is to refurbish cars and then turn around and sell them to people. There are a million cars that are dumped at wreckage
lots, and I can use the money I get from my summer job to buy a car and the parts I need for it. Junkyards are a gold mine for
parts, and they are cheap there. I can spend my free time putting the cars back together, and then I can sell the car to someone
for a lot more than it cost me to fix it. I first learned how to work on cars years ago with training from my uncle. He was an
expert mechanic on his farm back in the 1930s. Learning from him was one of the most beneficial and interesting experiences i
had while living in California.

Passage 3

you experience problems with your UltraPro, contact the help line at 1-800-555-1234.
Software: The factory-installed software on your UltraPro Laptop is guaranteed for a period of 90 days.

Passage 4
Until this moment, I had looked upon the valley as my grave. I had seen no possibility of getting out of it alive. But now I found
courage and began to plan my escape. First, I picked up all the large diamonds I could find and stored them in my leather bag.
This I tied securely to my belt. I then chose the piece of meat that seemed best for my purpose. With my turban I tied meat
firmly to my back. This done, I laid face down and awaited the coming of the eagles. I soon heard the flapping of their mighty
wings above me. Then I had the joy of feeling one of them seize my piece of meat, and me with it. We rose slowly toward its nest,
into which it dropped me.

Read the passage from animal farm. "that was part of the arrangement! " cried squealer. "jones's shot only grazed him. i could show you this in his own writing, if you were able to read it. the plot was for snowball, at the critical moment, to give the signal for flight and leave the field to the enemy. and he very nearly succeeded—i will even say, comrades, he would have succeeded if it had not been for our heroic leader, comrade napoleon. do you not remember how, just at the moment when jones and his men had got inside the yard, snowball suddenly turned and fled, and many animals followed him? and do you not remember, too, that it was just at that moment, when panic was spreading and all seemed lost, that comrade napoleon sprang forward with a cry of 'death to humanity! ' and sank his teeth in jones's leg? surely you remember that, comrades? " exclaimed squealer, frisking from side to side. now when squealer described the scene so graphically, it seemed to the animals that they did remember it. at any rate, they remembered that at the critical moment of the battle snowball had turned to flee. but boxer was still a little uneasy. how does the characterization of squealer support the author’s purpose? squealer's dramatic accusations draw parallels between him and stalin’s propagandists. squealer's uncertainty shows that he is not a reliable ally of napoleon and is ineffective with messaging. squealer's ability to get the animals to listen to him shows that any animal can rise to be a leader in time. squealer's humble interactions with the animals reflect the importance of equality and cooperation.

This excerpt is from “the poet” by alfred, lord tennyson. the poem describes a poet's consciousness and perception. which three lines suggest the richness of a poet's thoughts? thus truth was multiplied on truth, [the world like one great garden show'd,] and thro' the wreaths of floating dark upcurl'd, rare sunrise flow'd. [and freedom rear'd in that august sunrise] her beautiful bold brow, when rites and forms before his burning eyes melted like snow. [there was no blood upon her maiden robes] sunn'd by those orient skies; but round about the circles of the globes of her keen eyes and in her raiment's hem was traced in flame wisdom, a name to shake [all evil dreams of power--a sacred name.] and when she spake, [her words did gather thunder as they ran,] and as the lightning to the thunder which follows it, riving the spirit of man, making earth wonder, so was their meaning to her words. no sword of wrath her right arm whirl'd, [ but one poor poet's scroll, and with 'his' word] she shook the world.
