What affect did the signing of the declaration of independence have on the colonists?

    The Declaration of Independence is the founding document of the United States of America (USA). The Continental Congress of the British Colonies in North America approved the declaration at the Independence Hall in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776. The document proclaimed that the original thirteen US colonies were "free and independent states." It was the last step in a long process that led the colonies to definitive separation from Britain.
